Advancing Open Education Across a multi-linguistic world
Francophone and Portuguese OER Project
The Francophone and Portuguese OER Project brought together universities, experts, and institutions across the Francophone, Portuguese speaking and anglophone ecosystem to co-create high-quality open educational resources that expand access to education at scale. These projects have now ended, but the resources are still available.
Courses with Impact
At the core of the project is a portfolio of free, open online micro-courses introducing open education, copyright, and open licensing.
Developed collaboratively by leading institutions from the French- and Portuguese-speaking world and New Zealand, the courses are aligned with international quality standards and designed for flexible use across diverse educational contexts.
By making these resources freely available, the project directly supports open education.

Expert Communities Driving Quality
The project was powered by dedicated expert groups of academics, instructional designers, and digital learning specialists from across the French- and Portuguese-speaking world.
These communities co-designed and peer-reviewed the course content, shared best practices in open education and digital pedagogy, and strengthened institutional capacity in OER development. This collaborative model ensured both academic excellence and the long-term sustainability of the resources produced.
A Platform for International Collaboration
The Francophone and Portuguese speaking OER Projects served as a catalyst for cross-border collaboration, connecting institutions across Africa, Europe, America, Oceania and beyond. It enabled:
Knowledge exchange across regions with shared linguistic and cultural contexts
Joint development of scalable educational solutions
Strengthening of global multilinguistic academic networks
Identification of key lessons learnt and challenges when adapting OER across different languages, cultures and legal contexts
