Introduction

Indonesia is in the stages of developing its distance and online learning ecosystem. The government has recognized the potential of distance education to bridge educational gaps across its vast archipelago since the establishment of Universitas Terbuka in 1984. Initiatives such as the policy released by the Ministry of Education and Culture allowing universities to offer distance learning programs aimed at enhancing accessibility have gained positive responses from universities where now another 26 universities are offering distance learning programs. However, quality assurance mechanisms are still evolving, with ongoing efforts to develop comprehensive standards and accreditation processes which suit the characteristics of distance higher education institutions.

Accreditation of Bachelor’s and Master’s Distance Education Programs at Universitas Terbuka

This instrument is based on the regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 5 of 2020 concerning Accreditation of Study Programs and Higher Education, Article 37 paragraph (1), among other things, that the Independent Accreditation Institution (LAM) is tasked with compiling study program accreditation instruments based on National Higher Education Standards (point a), carrying out accreditation study program (item b), publish, change, or revoke decisions regarding the accreditation status and accredited ranking of the study program (item c). Thus, based on its duties and authority, the Independent Education Accreditation Institute (LAMDIK) prepares and compiles study program accreditation instruments following higher education standards and carries out accreditation of study programs, including for study programs at the Universitas Terbuka (UT).
