Quality Resources: Oceania

Here you will find a collection of quality resources with a focus on Oceania, principally in Australia and New Zealand.

Introduction

Both Australia and New Zealand have well-established structures for quality assurance, and both meet the requirements of the International Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance inTertiary Education, but they operate in distinct ways.

In Australia the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency is the national quality and regulatory body for higher education.  In 2021 TEQSA revised the Higher Education Standards Framework, which encompasses institutional academic quality assurance.  The Framework contains guidance notes on important dimensions of academic quality, including technology-enhanced learning.  TEQSA’s Good Practice Hub includes resources on hybrid learning.

In New Zealand academic quality assurance for universities is overseen by the Committee on University Academic Programmes.  This system is unique, in that the eight New Zealand universities effectively quality assure each other by scrutinising all proposals for new or significantly changed programmes or qualifications before being approved by the Committee.  The audit function is carried out by the Academic Quality Agency.  Both CUAP and AQA are currently under government review

Technology Enhanced Learning Accreditation Standards

The TELAS Framework is a robust standards‑based accreditation system for evaluating and assuring online learning quality, developed through extensive stakeholder engagement in higher education, and is now used internationally to assess, certify and recognise best practice in technology‑enhanced learning.

ASCILITE provides a peer-reviewed fully open access publication platform for traditional and non-traditional publications in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in Australasia and abroad. It aims to provide a scholarly distribution and publication pathway for these alternative forms of best practice and thought to traditional journal articles – increasing the reach and impact of TEL to international contributions and an audience beyond the academy.  It also holds an annual conference and publishes its proceedings.
