Winner of the ICDE Prize of Excellence 2023 for Institutions: The Virtual University of Pakistan
The ICDE Prize of Excellence Institutional Prize is awarded to an institution, an association or a network of institutions for very significant achievements or contributions to the international community of Open, Flexible and Distance Learning (OFDL) during the past five years.
The Virtual University of Pakistan was established in 2002, offering ICT-based distance education under the motto ‘Quality Education at Your Doorstep’. Utilizing internet and satellite broadcasts, the university strives to build a better future with the ambitious aims to eradicate unemployment, equip the workforce with essential skills, and enable individuals to supplement their income by developing multiple revenue streams. This is best seen through their latest project, the DigiSkills program. Developed together with the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication Technology, DigiSkills represents the most extensive training initiative ever undertaken by the Government of Pakistan. This ground-breaking online training program offers comprehensive, cost-free instruction in various aspects of freelancing services, often referred to as the Future-of-Work.
The project exemplifies the Virtual University of Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by offering training courses completely free of cost to over three million students irrespective of gender, location, income, or religious affiliation since its inception in 2018. This program is particularly aligned with quality education for all, gender equality and targeting of underprivileged communities. It has had a great impact across the country, with over 800,000 training courses undertaken by women and delivering over one million training courses in total.
The Virtual University of Pakistan is awarded the ICDE Institutional Prize of Excellence for its dedication to pushing boundaries and fostering excellence in OFDL. It is an inspiration to the whole ICDE community.
